Hebru Brantley
Hebru Brantley (b. 1981) is an American artist whose paintings, sculptures, and immersive installations bring together comic books, Japanese anime, graffiti, and African American history. His signature characters, Flyboy and Lil Mama, draw inspiration from the Tuskegee Airmen, reimagining their pioneering spirit through youthful figures in aviator goggles. Using vivid color and expressive storytelling, Brantley explores identity, nostalgia, power, and hope while placing Black protagonists at the center of his imaginative worlds. His work celebrates the freedom to dream, creating contemporary heroes whose playful appearance carries a deeper message of possibility and resilience.
